MONICA LLOYD, CNN STUDENT NEWS ANCHOR: Hello and welcome to this Thursday, December 21st edition of CNN Student News! From CNN Center, I'm Monica Lloyd. Tough questions and tough decisions: The president addresses both, in a meeting with the news media. War room? Not exactly. But war has certainly been a top topic between these walls. Join us for a look inside a room "as seen on TV." And soaring the skies, the "jet-man" may not have a sleigh, but his hobby does resemble that of a certain jolly old elf.

First Up: Iraq: More Troops?

LLOYD: First up, President Bush says it's been a difficult year for U.S. troops and for the Iraqi people. But he also said once again he's willing to do whatever it takes to end the Iraq insurgency. Yesterday, Mr. Bush held what's expected to be his last news conference of 2006. Kyung Lah brings us highlights, and describes what kind of military changes we could be seeing in the year ahead.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

KYUNG LAH: President Bush tackled Iraq in his year-end news conference. Reflecting on 2006...a year that brought both open elections and waves of sectarian violence.

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: We enter this new year clear-eyed about the challenges in Iraq. And equally clear about our purpose. I'm not going to make predictions about 2007 will look like in Iraq. Except that it's going to require difficult choices and additional sacrifices.

LAH: The president acknowledged the coming year could bring a surge in the number of U.S. troops in Iraq. He also said the overall size of the U.S. armed forces, stretched by challenges around the globe needs to grow.

BUSH: We need to increase in the permanent size of both the United States Army and the United States Marines. I've asked Secretary Gates to determine how such an increase could take place, and report back to me as quickly as possible.

LAH: Robert Gates-- in his first week as defense secretary-- arrived in Baghdad to get what he called quote: "ground truth."

ROBERT GATES, SECRETARY OF DEFENSE: What I am here to do is to talk to all these folks, talk with the Iraqis, and see what advice I can give to the president to help him make the decision.

LAH: President Bush backed away from his previous assertion that the U.S. was 'absolutely winning' in Iraq but made it clear he believes the U.S. can win.

BUSH: I believe that we're going to win. I believe that. If I didn't think that, I wouldn't have our troops there.

LAH: In Washington, I'm Kyung Lah.

Shoutout

CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS: Time for the Shoutout! Which of these is NOT a real room at the White House? If you think you know it, shout it out! Is it: A) East Room, B) Roosevelt Library, C) Roosevelt Room or D) Situation Room? The Roosevelt Library is a real place; it's just not located at the White House. You'd find it in New York. That's your answer and that's your Shoutout!

The Real Situation Room

LLOYD: Some of you CNN junkies might've guessed "The Situation Room," knowing it's the name of an afternoon show with Wolf Blitzer. Wrong! The White House does have its own, established in 1962 to help presidents link up with the Departments of State and Defense. The situations themselves can be unpredictable, but Ed Henry shows us how the room where they're addressed, just got upgraded.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ED HENRY, CNN REPORTER: You're in the Situation Room -- the real one at the White House -- used for forty years as the hub for national security meetings

And just like the CNN version -- it's getting an infusion of state-of-the-art electronics. After President Bush grew increasingly frustrated it wasn't up-to-snuff in a post-nine-eleven world, and tasked top aide Joe Hagin to fix it

JOE HAGIN, WHITE HOUSE DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF: It was very plain. it was very simple. Two conference rooms and a sort of a rabbit-warren of desks where various officers sat.

HENRY: The situation room has been glamorized in plenty of movies in T.V. shows like '24' and 'West Wing.' But the genuine situation room hadn't changed much since President Kennedy created it during the Cuban missile crisis.

With few updates as presidents from Lyndon Johnson to Bill Clinton dealt with foreign crises and White House aides dealt with fallout from the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan. Renovations were already being planned before the terror attacks of nine-eleven, but that day convinced the White House it was time for a complete demolition.

HAGIN: I think the president was very open after September 11. His frustration on that day not being able to communicate effectively a hundred percent of the time. And we really kicked into high gear after that.

HENRY: The new-and-improved sit room has a direct, secure feed to air force one. No less than five rooms for secure video conferences, instead of two, and 40 miles of communications cables. Sure there were national security reasons for the refurbishing. But with all these flat-screen TVs, was the White House also a little envious of Wolf Blitzer?

HAGIN: You know we don't have Wolf's budget but given the money we had available, it's nice. We also don't have the stage is not there like Wolf has. We can't move around the screens with quite the grace and finesse that he does.

HENRY: Joe Hagin says the renovation is ahead of schedule and under-budget. But, he won't reveal the cost .That's classified. Ed Henry, CNN, the White House.

Is this Legit?

AZUZ: Is This Legit? Pluto is an asteroid. False! Pluto is a dwarf planet...even though it used to be recognized as a regular ol' "planet" planet.

2006 Rewind

LLOYD: You probably remember counting it along with all the other planets. So what happened with Pluto? And while we're at it, what happened to the heavy hurricane season that was supposed to strike this year? We're wrapping up our "2006 Rewind" series today with the forces of nature that did, and didn't, make headlines. Here's Deanna Morawski with the weather.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DEANNA MORAWSKI, CNN REPORTER: Wherever they live, Americans found themselves 'under the weather' this year. In February, a record-breaking northeaster dumped more than two feet of snow on parts of the northeastern U.S., closing schools, causing blackouts and shutting down airports from West Virginia to Massachusetts.

Spring ushered in a deadly tornado season, especially for the Midwest. In March and April alone, some 500 twisters touched down in the U.S.... leading to nearly 50 deaths... and leaving a trail of destruction that few were prepared for.

STEVE DEFFIBAUGH, COLLIN CO. FIRE MARSHALL: This storm struck so quick and the tornado spawned so quickly as they often do. It's not like a hurricane where you have several weeks.

MORAWSKI: But we were reminded this year that hurricane predictions can be off. Forecasters said this year's hurricane season would be one for the record books. Turns out there were only five hurricanes and four tropical storms -- that's below average for recent years. And only two made landfall in the U.S. mainland. Tropical Storm Alberto hit Florida and Hurricane Ernesto paid visits to Florida and North Carolina as a tropical storm.

It didn't have a name, but a magnitude 6.7 earthquake rocked Hawaii in October. The tremors caused widespread blackouts, bridge collapses and road closures, and an estimated $200 million in damages. But surprisingly, there were no reported deaths or serious injuries.

Elsewhere in the solar system...Pluto suffered a major identity crisis. After decades of being considered the ninth planet, Pluto got demoted to 'dwarf planet' status because of its small size and irregular orbit. That meant textbooks everywhere had to be reprinted...and school kids had to memorize a brand new planetary line-up. Speaking of line-ups...the sun and moon did just that in March, making for the first total solar eclipse in years.

PROF. PAUL MURDIN, ASTRONOMIS: Not only does the moon cut out the sun's light, but it cuts out its heat as well. So there's a sudden chill in the air as the sun goes out. And it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

MORAWSKI: In addition to sporting funny glasses, some folks traveled thousands of miles to see the view -- which was best on the coast of Turkey. The next chance they'll have to see this type of event will be in 2008. With your 2006 Rewind, I'm Deanna Morawski.

Before We Go

LLOYD: Before we go, the future of flight is looking up in Switzerland. Of course, that's always a possibility when you're soaring through the skies with nothing but a pair of wings. The so-called "jet man" is a former military pilot who now works in the airline industry. He stays off the ground with a carbon wing and a jet pack with fuel for about six-and-a-half minutes' flight time. When the time runs out, It's parachutes to the rescue. One he can control, and one that deploys automatically if he loses consciousness.

Goodbye

LLOYD: That's one way to wing it! We'll have an all-new show for you tomorrow, so be sure to tune in then, same time, same place.
