II

Winter came. Mu Du had worn out two carrying-poles. Nasty bumps grew on his shoulder. But even if nipped, the bumps did not hurt. His family remained steady and could afford the essential things, such as food oil, salt, soy sauce and vinegar. He made a set of new winter cotton-padded clothes for his dad. Their life was neither too rich nor too humble. November 6th was a bright day. The dad and son made a new and longer carrying-pole. They scorched it above the fire and rubbed it with soy bean oil again and again. The carrying-pole reflected the disheveled hair and unclean faces of the two like a mirror.

At high noon, they set up an altar with an incense burner in the courtyard and laid the new carrying-pole, with red ribbons on both ends, horizontally on it. Mu Du knelt down in the dust, piously worshipping the god of carrying-pole with kowtow. He felt indebted to the carrying-pole that provided his family pocket money and therefore freed him from carrying alpine rush. Since the weather was becoming cold, he decided to carry charcoal deep into the mountains. After their worship, his dad tied a bag of food at one end of the carrying-pole and six pairs of straw-made shoes to the back of Mu Du’s belt to send Mu Du on his journey. Mu Du walked backward to the courtyard gate, and then turned around standing at attention. He bit his teeth thirty six times, drew four horizontal lines on the ground with his right thumb and then five vertical lines cross the former four. After this, he started his incantation, “Four Horizontal Lines and Five Vertical Lines”

Today I begin my working life.
King Yu protects me on my way,
King Chu You drives bandits away.
Thieves dare not creep into my yard,
Tigers and wolves avoid me and my home.
It is a long journey from my home,
A guy on my way almost dies.
In such a hurry and moment of haste,
The protection of the goddess is sent to me.

After the incantation, Mu Du strode out without turning back. Watching his son step out of sight, the dad picked up a piece of mud and placed it on the Four-Five lines. He leaned on the gate, tears blurring his eyes. The sound of firecracker came from the courtyard of his neighbor.

In the twelfth lunar month, Darky’s father-in-law, the credit agent, bought a share of a mushroom works in the town. With ample capital, the works bought a lot of mushroom seeds and built many workshops, whose earnings, after successful cultivation, doubled several times! The credit agent received money like running water, so he sold his former house and built a courtyard in the downtown area, which was all bricks from top to bottom and as grand as a lord’s temple. The villagers were struck by the family’s sudden wealth. Darky, too, was stunned. A good many people came to lend a hand. Darky placed a stone pillow she had taken from her parents’ home on the trailer, but her small husband threw it away.

Darky shouted, “That’s my pillow!”

Her husband said, “You now live in the town; must you act you like a savage?”

Darky protested, “I’ve been used to it from childhood. Without it, my head fills with fever.”

Her small husband cursed: “Miserable wretch!” and then deliberately left the stone pillow behind.

Panic-stricken, Darky stood for a while. With people eyeing her, She did not talk back, nor did she weep. Then she hugged the greasy pillow and gave it to Mu Du’s dad.

Darky, “Uncle, we are leaving, I leave this to you. It is a star fallen from the sky.  All his life my grandpa used it and passed it on to my dad. When I got married, my mum gave it to me as dowry. The pillow is quiet and cool. When your head touches it, you won’t have eye trouble.”

From then on, Darky stayed in the town. She became busier, not only doing the cooking for the family but also being in charge of domestic things as feeding the chickens, the pig, dog and cat. She went out daily, where all the field work fell to her. Moreover, her parents-in-law became particular that there shouldn’t be a tiny mote of dust or single speck of wheat straw in the courtyard each day. So Darky slept less than before. Her small husband complained of her gluttony and demanded she keep slim. He called her “Black Soy Bean” for she developed a darker face with her slender body.

At the end of the year, her husband bought her a pair of leather shoes, actually leatherette. Each market day, Darky was asked to wear the shoes, but they made her large feet ache. So after coming back from the market and taking the shoes off, her eyes brimmed with tears. She knew her small husband was not fond of her and thought her ugly. She was born plain. How could a pair of leather shoes change that fact? Her husband beat her and threatened her with a knife. Finally, Darky grabbed her husband, whose arms and legs seemed to be tied, and threw him onto the kang as if it were a manure basket, and said, “I’m showing you my strength!”

When outsiders heard of this, they joked about it. As Darky worked in the fields, someone would ask, “So, Darky, have you taught your man a lesson again?” Darky kept silent. Then the questioner would needle a little more, “Darky, why not wear your leather shoes? Your family is so well-off, why don’t you ask your father-in-law for a wrist watch?”

Having heard too many words like this, Darky began to consider: “How could her family become so rich? Many households are doing business in the town, though none makes money so easily!” So she asked about the secret when her husband returned home in the evening. He answered: “I’ve heard much about it, too; they all envy us! If anyone asks again, just say ‘the policy permits this, so what?”

Darky was surprised to see her father-in-law often talking with visitors in his bedroom in the evening. Once she entered, they stopped talking. In the daytime, her father-in-law would invite town officials to drink and eat. Once the township head, drunk, pointing his finger at the nose of her father-in-law, and shouted: “You, mother-fucker! You’re just in charge of a credit cooperative, but you live a better life than me, a head of the town. I warn you, there are anonymous letters charging that you were sticky-fingered with the loans.”

On hearing this, her father-in-law looked pale and hurried to help him onto Darky’s kang, serving tea and vinegar. Finally, the township head threw up all over the kang. Shortly afterward, rumors went about the town that her father-in-law had proposed to contribute 30,000 RMB to enlarge the local elementary school to improve education in the town.

Darky wondered where so much money was tucked away and how much her family had altogether? Some officials from the county came and held a town-level conference, at which her father-in-law stood in the rostrum, his face glowing with excitement, red silk draped over his shoulders and a big red flower pinned on his breast. From then on, a red silk banner with a huge yellow character awarded to him hung in the principal room at home. When the yard gate is wide open, those who passed by could see a stretch of brilliant red from the distance. After the school took on an entirely new look, her father-in-law became the honorary schoolmaster and Darky’s small husband was hired as a PT teacher. He became an important man who led his students to play basketball every day as merry as an immortal.

At first, Darky did not understand how her father-in-law, such a stingy person could become so generous, but now she understood. At night her small husband tormented her on the bed, saying nowadays she was not the wife of a farmer but the wife of a government official. Darky did not feel the benefit of his being a cadre; on the contrary, she suffered more. In the darkness, he called out the name of the prettiest maiden in the town and forced her to answer his cry. Darky was livid: “She is herself and I’m myself, go and fuck her if you dare!”

Regrettably her angry charge came true. Her husband did not return home at night. Two days later, Darky went to the school and found a woman, the prettiest one in the town, in her husband’s room. Her husband explained that they were talking about learning issues. Darky thought to herself, “Maybe those two really are learning together, if so, I shouldn’t be part of the conversation.” On leaving, she said, “you have been here for several days. As the room is damp, you should buy some charcoal to warm it at night.”

For a month or two, her husband did not come to her. She felt relaxed and enjoyed many good nights’ sleep. Noting that her husband, like a lamp burning too much oil, was getting thinner day by day, Darky felt a little upset. She went to the school again, only to find that they both were still learning together. Without discovering any hard evidence, she returned in low spirits.
