In stillness, a person’s thoughts are as clear as water, and his true heart can be seen to the bottom. In carefree moments, a person’s mettle an bearing are unhurried, and his real motive can be recognized. In a life devoid of wealth and fame, a person’s attitude is modest and amiable, and his temperament and taste can be discovered. Nothing matters more than these three respects in examining the nature of man and the soundness of his principles.
The true nature of man’s heart can be seen when one bears a clear and pure mind in stillness. The true subtlety of man’s heart can be perceived when one keeps calm and unhurried at leisure. The true interest of man’s heart can be found when one makes more desirable than the above three respects to examine man’s heart and comprehend the Way of the world.
In tranquility, one’s thinking is crystal clear so that the real form of the mind is revealed; in leisure, one’s manner is calm and unhurried so that the real nature of the mind is found; in simplicity, one’s mood is modest and unruffled so that the real pleasure of the mind is obtained. For contemplating the mind and awaking to the arcane truth, nothing can compare with the above three ways.
