Wealthy British students: 6 ways to spot an aristocrat

by James Tozer (Oxford University)

Most British universities will have a handful of students from aristocratic families – ancient, wealthy dynasties that have traditionally made up the British ruling class, who have enormous country homes, and even bigger parties. In the past, your typical aristocrat would be easy to spot, with a prominent double-chin, and an array of silly hats– but modern British society is too mixed for that to be the case today. Here are some top tips for spotting those wealthy heirs:

One: Hunt for a double-barrelled surname

Traditionally, double-barrelled surnames in England indicated the marriage of two wealthy families (e.g Palmer-Tomkinson,orTitchener-Barron). Three or four names are even better; no doubt you'll want to meet Mr or Miss Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax. If a magnificent estate is your heart's desire, trawl through the university email base until you find a few magic hyphens.

Two: Search in nightclub VIP areas

VIP areas (the acronym stands for “very importantperson”) are the most exclusive parts of English nightclubs – where the wealthiest clients can enjoy the privilege of hideously expensive champagne, and ostentatious small talk. Only the richest students can afford such luxury –and their funds are most likely supplied by successful parents.

Three: Look at the clothes

Wealthy students dress well – and those from old families will often wear the sort of clothes that their parents might. For guys, this usually means chinos (often dark red, which will conveniently hide expensive wine stains), shiny shoes, and possibly a selection of items in tweed (a traditional fabric). Girls dress classily, with expensive cock tail dresses(and occasionally low cut backs), and just the right amount of make-up.

Four: Listen to the accent

Students from old families have been brought up to speak properly; no dropped consonants or squashed vowels here. The grammar and vocabulary will inevitably deteriorate as the champagne flows, but the clipped pronunciation will remain constant – as will the mentioning of favourite countryside pursuits (hunting, shooting) and / or upcoming work opportunities at top London firms.

Five: Find out their subjects

Let's not beat around the bush: a couple of aristocratic students might go for maths or science, but for most the rigours of 9-5 lectures and empirical knowledge is a bit of beastly thought. Liberal arts courses are a popular choice, with flexible timetables in which to dabble in some croquet; equally likely are economics-based degrees, which provide a nice fast-track into daddy's company in the city.

Six: Check out their accommodation

Almost all students at British universities will spend their first year living in halls of residence (big accommodation blocks, where each student is allocated an individual room). Second year is for coping with a dingy flat and 5 other strangers; unless your wealthy parent shave purchased a nice local house for you and your best chums from school. No broken dishwashers here; prepare for house-parties galore.

(kandongsee)
