Trail of reclusive Bitcoin founder Nakamoto leads to Los Angeles

Bitcoin’s much mythologised founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, may have been hiding in plain sight all along – as a 64-year-old Japanese American called Satoshi Nakamoto.

Ever since the 2009 issue of the white paper outlining the rules of the virtual currency, the Satoshi name attached to it was thought to be a pseudonym.

For years the Bitcoin community has speculated about the identity of Mr Nakamoto, creating an elaborate foundation story around the nearly $7bn of Bitcoins that are now in circulation. Previous guesses included economist Nick Szabo, the man behind a proposal called Bit Gold, as well as the US and Russian security services.

Nakamoto was allegedly unmasked in a report by Newsweek Magazine yesterday. The author claimed to have tracked him to an address in the Los Angeles area of San Bernardino after speaking to his family and fellow Bitcoin programmers.

According to the report, Nakamoto only vaguely acknowledged his connection to the project by claiming to be no longer involved and declining to discuss his association further.

“It’s been turned over to other people. They are in charge of it now. I no longer have any connection,” Newsweek reported him as saying. The article apparently reveals that Nakamoto has shunned publicity in favour of a humble and private life rather than retreating to indulge in the Bitcoin millions he would have earned if he were its creator.

It also offers the first inkling of a possible motive for creating the global digital currency. Mr Nakamoto, a model railways enthusiast, was reportedly frustrated by high exchange rates and bank fees when buying train carriages from Britain.

Gavin Andresen, chief scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation, told Newsweek: “If you come out as the leader of Bitcoin, now you have to make appearances and presentations and comments to the press and that didn’t really fit with Satoshi’s personality.”

The reactions of the Bitcoin community to the revelation were mixed. Some questioned the tactics deployed by the Newsweek correspondent in tracking down Satoshi “It would have been nice if they found him, but promised to maintain his privacy,” said one on the Bitcoin Reddit forum. But for others it was just another chapter in the Bitcoin myth.
(FT)
