Predicting Apple's Future: Tim Cook's Gentle Path To Avoid Apple's Downfall

What will Apple do after the biggest quarterly results in corporate history?

Tim Cook has an interesting challenge ahead. Apple is so far ahead of the competition in terms of technology, revenue, profit, public perception, and critical acclaim, that there is no way to continue this momentum… is there?

Atari’s Nolan Bushnell certainly thinks so. Labelling Cook’s situation as ‘The Innovator’s Bonus’, and clearly alluding to ‘The Innovators Dilemma’ which he believes is coming up if not in 2015 but in 2016, Bushnell wants to know what happens next:

“There is a thing called the ‘innovator’s bonus’ where you can get an extraordinary margin based on your innovation. Even though the fast followers can match your features, you get known for being the innovator, so your brand has a better image.

That bonus used to have a half-life of about eight years. I think that has now shrunk to four at most. If [Apple] don’t continue with some remarkable innovation, then pretty soon their ability to charge premium prices for their products will go away.

It’s an interesting theory, but I think it misses Apple’s real skill. In terms of true innovation, Apple does not have a high strike rate. Where the strength lies is in polishing that one leap of faith (the iPhone is the obvious choice here) or constantly iterating until products become magical (the iPad and the MacBook Air spring to mind), it’s not an overnight success to a new product it’s the slow march of progress.

Given the results posted for Q1 2015, all eyes are going to be on Apple and what it does in the immediate future. Was this a flash in the pan, is it the start of something new, or have we seen Peak Apple?

Logically, one of three things will happen next. Apple will rise up and post another record-breaking quarter and beat its year on year performance for the quarter; Apple will fall back and lose sales in a direct comparison to this time in 2014; or Apple will stay exactly as it is just now and post the exact same numbers.

Admittedly that last option would be the most stunning of the three, and it’s there more to act as a dividing line. Both answers (Apple rises, or Apple falls) are equally amazing. Which is it to be? Stop for a moment and think what you expect to happen. Not what you want to happen, what you expect to happen.
