the story behind 5 great acronyms

Old people are always groaning about it, and it’s true: today’s generation are obsessed with acronyms. Even though the days when you used to shorten your texts as much as possible are long gone, there’s still no reason to waste your time saying entire syllables when you can do just as well with a couple of letters. Let’s take a look at some favourites.

【YOLO】

The one, the only: YOLO stands tall as a monument to new-fangled acronyms, a sign of hope for Twitter enthusiasts that almost anything can become a popular hashtag. Popularised by the 2011 song “The Motto” by rapper Drake, YOLO –"you only live once", the modern day carpe diem – was actually first used by German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in his 1774 play Calvigo (I’m not even joking). Respectable folk understandably disliked the phrase, as they thought teenagers used it to justify reckless and dangerous behaviour. Teenagers, of course, can be perfectly reckless and dangerous without acronyms

【ROFL】

Sometimes a simple LOL just isn’t enough. Sometimes you need to express that something it just plain funnier than LOL. Enter the Swiss army knife of acronyms, ROFL (“rolling on the floor laughing”) notable for its compounding effect, as it is able to transform into ROLFCOPTER and even, in certain situation, ROFLCOPTERMEGAZORD. Here we can see a rare example of acronyms superseding themselves and becoming actual words, a process which is at once magnificent and terrifying.
有时一个简单的“LOL(laugh out loud,大声笑)”或许不足以表达感情。当你想表达有些事比“LOL”更加好笑时,就轮到缩写界万能的瑞士军刀——ROFL(rolling on the floor laughing,笑到在地上打滚)出场了!

【OMG】

The battle cry of American teenage girls everywhere, OMG lets you subtly blaspheme without the downside of being sent directly to Hell. Use it to express surprise, use it sarcastically to utterly destroy your opponents – the uses are endless!

【FOMO】

Particularly popular in Oxford (where there is a nightclub event which capitalises on the idea of such social anxiety, and takes this acronym for its name), FOMO – “fear of missing out” – is a modern affliction where victims experience a constant worry that they are going to miss an opportunity. Often this can lead to extended levels of procrastination checking social media sites to make sure nobody is doing anything fun without you. Unbeknownst to you, this is exactly what all your friends are doing too. We call this the FOMO paradox.

【AAAAAAAA】

An honorary mention is required for the All-American Association Against Acronym And Abbreviation Abuse, which may just be the most ironic acronym of all time.
(All-American Association Against Acronym And Abbreviation Abuse)。
