Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Regular Press Conference on January 27, 2015

At the invitation of Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák will pay an official visit to China from February 2 to 5.

Q: US President Barack Obama said in his speech in New Delhi that the freedom of navigation in the Asia-Pacific must be upheld and disputes must be resolved peacefully. What is China's comment on that?

A: I answered that question yesterday. China is active in advocating, promoting and contributing to peace and stability of the region. We maintain that disputes in the South China Sea should be peacefully resolved through dialogue and consultation between countries directly concerned. The overall situation of the South China Sea is stable. China and ASEAN countries have the consensus that joint efforts should be made to safeguard peace and stability of the South China Sea. The freedom of navigation and overflight there has never seen any problem and will never see any in the future with the concerted efforts of China and relevant ASEAN countries. If relevant countries do wish for peace and stability of the region, they should do and say more that are conducive to the enhancement of mutual trust and cooperation between countries in the region.

Q: An editorial published by the New York Times on January 25 said that China is plundering Myanmar's rosewood, wildlife, minerals and other resources. It called for a stop to such kind of activities. How does China respond?

A: The Chinese side is always opposed to illegal logging, mining and trading on wildlife. We stay committed to cracking down on this kind of illegal activities, preserving natural resources and safeguarding stability of border areas with our neighbors including Myanmar through strengthened cooperation. The Chinese side also asks companies going abroad for business cooperation to abide by local laws and regulations, and protect the environment.

We have noted the relevant media report. It distorts the facts and attempts to sour the good-neighborly and friendly relationship between China and the relevant country.

Q: Officials from the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry of Indonesia said that the Indonesian government would ban foreign fishing vessels from large fishing operations in the territorial waters of Indonesia in accordance with the newly enacted regulation. Previously signed cooperation deals will be revoked. Countries including China may be affected. What is China's comment on that?

A: The Chinese side has noted the relevant report. Competent authorities of China and Indonesia are in communication on specific issues concerning fishery cooperation. The Chinese side hopes that the Indonesian government would take concrete measures to safeguard the investment interests of Chinese companies in Indonesia as well as the lawful rights and interests of the Chinese crew. The Chinese side is ready to work hand in hand with the Indonesian side to ensure the sound and steady development of bilateral fishery cooperation.

Q: The Ukrainian government announced on January 26 that Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine have entered a state of emergency. What is China's comment on the current situation in Ukraine?

A: Armed conflicts in eastern Ukraine have flared up, causing heavy casualties. The Chinese side is deeply concerned about that. Peace rather than war, cooperation rather than rivalry is the aspiration shared by people from all over the world. The Chinese side stands for a political settlement of the crisis, opposes any action that may increase tension and hopes that the conflicting parties of Ukraine can keep calm and exercise restraint so as to avoid escalating the situation. It is hoped that all parties concerned can make full use of the existing mechanism for political mediation, launch inclusive dialogue and strive to push for the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. The Chinese side is willing to play a positive and constructive role to that end.

Q: US Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman is in China for a visit. Who will meet with her and what topics will be touched upon?

A: As agreed by China and the US, US Under Secretary of State Sherman is visiting China from January 26 to 28. The two sides will exchange views on China-US relations as well as international and regional issues of common interest.

Q: It is reported that China will hold a military parade this year. Can you confirm that? What is the purpose and significance of doing so?

A: This year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. It is an important moment to review the history and look forward into and map out the future. China, the UN and other countries concerned will hold commemorative activities.

China is the victor and the major eastern theater of WWII. It has made important contribution to and great sacrifice for the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. By hosting commemorative events with other counties, China is to awaken each and every virtuous man's desire for and commitment to peace, to refresh people's memory of the history and love for peace, and to showcase China's staunch position of upholding the victory of WWII and the post-war international order, and safeguarding world peace. It is hoped that all countries can take the opportunity to look back on history, draw lessons from history, work in unison to usher in a brighter future for mankind, and build a world of enduring peace and common prosperity.
