Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Regular Press Conference on Febuary 16, 2015

China holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for February, and calls for a Security Council open debate on February 23 on the maintenance of international peace and security by reflecting on history, and reaffirming the commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend and chair the debate in the name of the president of the UN Security Council.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN and the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. This debate will serve as a platform for all parties to memorize the history and look into the future, exhibit to the international community the Security Council's strong determination of maintaining world peace and security, advance the building of a new model of international relations with win-win cooperation at its core and kick-start commemorative activities celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the UN.

Q: The UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution on February 15 demanding the Huthis militia of Yemen to retreat from government institutions, release Yemeni President Abde-Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and cabinet members and unconditionally take part in the UN-brokered negotiations. How does China comment on the Yemeni situation?

A: The Chinese side follows closely the political and security situation in Yemen. It is our hope that parties concerned of Yemen can follow the resolution passed by the UN Security Council, maintain dialogue and properly resolve the disputes through consultation, press ahead with the political transition process and restore national stability and order at an early date.

Q:Recently some countries have temporarily closed their embassies in Yemen. Does China have such a plan?

A: We have noted that some countries have decided to temporarily close their embassies in Yemen. The Chinese diplomats in Yemen are still holding fast to their posts and keeping close contact with all parties in Yemen to provide necessary security assistance to Chinese institutions and personnel in Yemen. As far as I have learnt, we have no plan to evacuate from Yemen at this moment. We will monitor what is going on in Yemen.

Q: A footage released by the Islamic State showed the beheading of 21 kidnapped Egyptian Christians. Does China have any comment on this?

A: The Chinese side is against all forms of terrorism and condemns the brutal killing of innocent people. Our condolences go out to the Egyptian government and the bereaved families. It is our belief that the international community should step up cooperation and jointly tackle the threat of terrorism, following the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and other widely recognized norms governing international relations.

Q: The conflicting zone in eastern Ukraine started implementing the ceasefire agreement on February 15. How does China comment on the situation in Ukraine?

A: We have been following the situation in eastern Ukraine. China speaks highly of the continuous mediation efforts by leaders of Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine to politically resolve the Ukrainian crisis. We support and call for relevant parties' implementation of the existing consensus, the ceasefire agreement in particular, so that the political settlement of the crisis can be advanced and peace and tranquility of Ukraine can be restored as soon as possible.

Q: Some parts in north Myanmar are still being ravaged by conflicts. Media reports say that local ethnic militia in Kokang is associated with China, and how does China respond to this? Will China mediate the conflicts in north Myanmar?

A: China always respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar, and does not allow any organization or individual to spoil China-Myanmar relations and undermine stability of the border area on the Chinese territory.

We hope that all conflicting parties of Myanmar can exercise restraint, and prevent the situation from escalating and affecting the stability of China-Myanmar border area and the security on the Chinese side.

China is ready to continue with its constructive role in the peace process within Myanmar in accordance with the wish of the Myanmar side.

Q: The China-Japan Friendship Hospital has deleted the word "friendship" for short. Does this reflect the Chinese government's attitude towards Japan? Is there any diplomatic consideration behind this?

A: I'd like to refer you to the public health authorities for the standard simplified name of the China-Japan Friendship Hospital. The Chinese government holds a consistent position and policy on developing relations with Japan. We maintain that we should develop endurable, sound and steady relations with Japan based on the four political documents between China and Japan following the spirit of taking history as a mirror and facing up to the future. This is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples and conducive to regional peace and stability. We hope that the Japanese side and the Chinese side can work together towards this goal.

According to the holiday arrangement for the 2015 Spring Festival, the regular press conference of the Foreign Ministry will be adjourned from February 18 to 24 and resumed on 25. During the adjournment, the Spokesperson's Office will take questions by phone.
