It refers to an energy conservation service sold to companies to improve energy usage.

海泡 (hai3 pao4) overseas-lingering grads

Some Chinese students stay much longer than necessary in a foreign country after finishing their study because they lack confidence to find a good job in their home country. The expression plays on the Chinese word 泡, which can mean either bubble, froth or, as a verb, to linger.

海鸥 (hai3 ou1) globe-trotting businesspeople

Seagull, as this Chinese term means literally, describes some Chinese people who have an overseas education background and frequently take business trips to foreign countries. They are likened to seagulls flying over the sea all the time.

海根 (hai3 gen1) back-to-the-root Chinese

Many Chinese become well established in a foreign country after finishing their study, but they are more than ready to return to China to spend the rest of their life. As the old Chinese saying goes, “falling leaves will return to the roots.”

Instead of a jackpot, this term refers to some lottery prizes with a very small value — so small that you can afford only a hotpot meal with each of the prizes.

黄昏恋 (huang2hun1lian4) sunset love, December heartbeat

While Chinese youths are traditionally compared to the rising sun, the elderly are associated with the setting sun. Hence, a romance involving two seniors is often called “huanghunlian,” which literally means “love at dusk.”

护犊族 (hu4du2zu2) pampering parents

While people tend to criticize young people living off their parents and becoming NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training), they have also begun to blame the phenomenon on those parents (and sometimes grandparents as well) who mollycoddle their grown-up children.

黑救护车 (hei1 jiu4 hu4 che1) illegal ambulance

It refers to mini-buses which pretend to be regular ambulances. They park outside the big hospitals and offer cheap prices to relatives of patients who plan to transfer the patients to other venues. There are no first-aid facilities aboard these buses.

海派清口 (hai3 pai4 qing1 kou3) Shanghai-style stand-up

Shanghai-born stand-up comedian Zhou Libo made his unique one-man performance a huge success. Armed with wit, humor and knowledge, Zhou comments on many aspects of the city life, past and present, in a farcical manner. The show is performed mostly in Shanghai dialect.

红毯杀手 (hong2 tan3 sha1 shou3) red carpet spoiler

It means an actor or actress who is dressed in a distasteful or inappropriate way when walking the red carpet at an event.

火车座 (huo3 che1 zuo4) restaurant train seat

A kind of soft seat with a high back at a cafe that is long enough to accommodate two persons. The expression comes from the resemblance to the seats on a train.

红颜知己 (hong2 yan2 zhi1 ji3) confidante

When a man meets a woman who is willing to share her secrets or emotional privacies with him and vice versa, the woman is considered as a 红颜知己 in Chinese. In Chinese, 红颜, which is translated literally as red face, traditionally means a beauty.

汉堡人才 (han4 bao3 ren2 cai2) hamburger talent

It refers to white-collar workers who suffer repeated setbacks in job hunting though they have a decent education and enough work experience. Their plight is like a hamburger that looks enticing but is low in nutrition.

婚活族 (hun1 huo2 zu2) marriage hunter/live-to-marry clan

活血库 (huo2 xue3 ku4) volunteer blood donor

The term, “live blood bank” by its literal meaning, refers to volunteer blood donors. Shanghai aims to recruit 10,000 volunteer blood donors this year to be on stand-by for emergency blood supplies during Shanghai World Expo 2010. They will be made up of medical staff, college students, soldiers and social volunteers with various blood types.

豁胖 (huo1 pang3) showy brag

Some people will blow up the size of their wealth, health and wisdom in front of others in order to make themselves look or sound better than they actually are.

胡萝卜族 (hu2 luo2 bo zu2) carrot-mobber

Carrot-mobbers refer to consumers who team up to place big group orders to corporations and small businesses which are selling eco-friendly products. They choose to use their buying power to support “greener businesses,” a trend appearing to be an upgrade of old boycotts.

花心(hua1 xin1) unfaithful

The expression is often applied to men who stray away from a faithful relationship with their spouses. It literally means a “flowery heart,” as flower is often associated with love or romance in Chinese.

海鸥经理 (hai3 ou1 jing1 li3) seagull manager

The term is used to describe a management style of interacting with employees only when a problem arises, making hasty decisions about things they have little understanding of, then leaving others to deal with the mess they leave behind.

黄金粥 (huang2 jin1 zhou1) golden porridge

The term, “golden porridge” in its literal meaning and pronounced the same as “golden week” in Chinese, replaces the original word for the golden holidays. It originated from a namesake song of folk singer Zhou Yunpeng depicting golden week as not gold all over the ground but one bowl of porridge per person. “Golden Week” describes each of the two annual national holidays — Spring Festival in January or February and National Day in October — that cause congestion in traffic, accommodation and consumption as large crowds flock to travel.

换草运动 (huan4 cao3 yun4 dong4) acquaintance blind date

The term literally means “exchanging grass” with grass referring to young men. Such events are usually initiated by “leftover women” — single women who have passed the best age for getting married. These women may bring single male friends, colleagues or relatives to a get-together and expect to find their Mr Right among their counterparts’ male friends.
