This is a Chinese translation of the English word ubersexual. It refers to a male who is similar to a metrosexual but displays a bit more traditional manly qualities such as confidence, strength and style.

打新族 (da3xin1zu2) new-stock investors

Due to the hefty profit potential, newly listed securities have become a hit choice for Chinese investors over the past few months.

吊档裤 (diao4dang3ku3) sagging pants

Sagging pants, a style that became popular in the early 1990s through hip-hop artists, are deemed a criminal offense in a growing number of communities in the United States. The trend began in US prisons, where oversized uniforms were issued without belts to prevent suicide. The style later spread through rappers and music videos.

独二代 (du2’er4dai4) the second-generation only child

Those born to families following China’s “one couple, one child” policy are called the only children, hence the only-child generation. Now their “only children” are forming a new generation in the country.

冻容 (dong4rong2) freeze one’s youth

This Chinese term refers to the phenomenon of some beauty-conscious young women in their early 20s who use anti-aging tonics and exercise in an attempt to keep their youthful looks for as long as possible.

弹格路 (dan4ge2lu4) cobblestone road

This term is frequently used in Shanghai, as cobbled roads were typical in downtown areas in the old days. Now a new street in Hongkou District is being paved with cobbles to give visitors a taste of antiquity.

单细胞动物 (dan1xi4bao1dong4wu4) simple-minded people

The term, initially appeared in some cartoon strips, means single-cell creatures in Chinese. It is now used by young people to describe someone who is simple-minded and easy to get along with.

短征 (duan3zheng1) Short March

The term refers to a wave of new affluent Chinese moving to suburbs as they believe their cozy life could only be achieved in quiet suburbs instead of urban areas which are becoming increasingly crowded and expensive. For example, in Shanghai alone, urban planners believe some five million people will move to “satellite cities” around downtown in the next 10 years.

低碳生活 (di1tan4sheng1huo2) low-carbon life

The term refers to a new way of life that depends on less and less emission of carbon dioxide. For example, it means a life more on foot than on car wheels.

吊模 (diao4mo2) street hoaxer, beguiler

The term refers to mostly young women who are hired to lure people from street into cafe bars, restaurants or dubious places where the victims will face steep rip-off or blackmail.

豆腐渣 (dou4fu3zha1) jerry-built project

In Chinese, the term literally means made of residue left by processing soybean curd. It is an equivalent to “jerry-built” in English. Such projects in China often involve corrupt business people or officials.

道德督察 (dao4de2du1cha2) moral police

Describes public opinion attacks on real estate tycoons who refused to donate much to the quake zone in Sichuan.

倒卡族 (dao4ka3zu2) coupon scalping clan

Those who make profits dealing in a variety of coupon-like cards.

肚腩肉 (du4nan2rou4) muffin top

A pejorative term used to describe a fat belly with flesh spilling over low-hanging pants, like the soft top of a muffin.

动批族 (dong4pi1zu2) wholesale buyers

The term refers to people who are fond of shopping at wholesale markets. They usually pretend to be shop owners to get a cheaper price.

钝感力 (dun4 gan3 li4) power of insensitivity

It is the ability to face up to setbacks and failures by playing down the painful sting they actually inflict on the sufferer. It comes from the namesake novel by Japanese author Junichi Watanabe.
