freeters

It is a combination of English word "free" and the German word "arbeiter", which means worker. It refers to those who work only when they feel they need some money. They have a working time more flexible than freelancers. Usually freeters work part-time in IT, advertising or other media outlets and most of them are well-known in their field of career.

act endearingly

In Shanghai dialect, not only a young woman but also a man can employ endearment to attract attention or invite sympathy.

福袋(fu2dai4)
lucky bag

Lucky bag is a promotion method used by shopping malls. The malls sell several products in a bag, with different combinations, to shoppers at fixed price. The price is lower than the combined retail price of the products in the bag.

粉飞客 (fen3fei1ke4)
fanfic

An abbreviation for "fan fiction," the term refers to fans who are interested in writing sequels or changing plots of TV series to express their ideas, passions or dissatisfactions.

rebel, betray

It refers to anyone who rebels against the authority or turns his or her back on a friend in an unexpected manner.

放水 (fangshui)
throw a game, lose on purpose

It usually happens in competitive games. One side loses the game on purpose after reaching a deal with the other side.

clear the table

Many restaurants limit dining hours on the New Year's Eve or busy holiday seasons so that each table can be used to serve more than one group of diners at a meal time. After a table of customers finishes dining, waiters or waitresses will clear the table to attend to the next batch of customers.

Some IT manufacturers prefer to make a shortcut on their circuit boards as a remedy to fix bugs caused by wrong designs. Producers often claim that it is a component. However, users often reject products with jumper wire and consider them as substandard.

Open-air shopping centers become more popular among customers because of the spacious environment and fresh air. Not like traditional indoor shopping malls, the open-air ones can be surrounded by trees, flowers, even bridges and creeks. Among the 11 shopping centers opened last year in Shanghai, four are non-mall centers.

This phrase mainly refers to lawyers who bribe judges on behalf of their clients. Wu Zhenhan, former president of the Hunan Provincial Higher People's Court, was sentenced to death with a two-year grace period, for taking six million yuan in bribes.

In the Beijing dialect, this term refers to a friend since one's childhood.

饭泡粥(fan4pao4zhou1)
chatterbox, gasbag

This is the name of a favorite breakfast food for Shanghainese, made of rice cooked in water. If you prefer it softer, you cook the rice in the water for a longer time, creating a lot of bubbles. Now, it's used as a nickname for anyone who's excessively talkative.

stay in an air-con place

With the land scorching under the sizzling sun outside, many love to stay inside all day long with air-conditioning on. However, health experts warn that this could be bad for one's health. From time to time, one should sweat it a little and get some fresh air outside. The first character in this Chinese term means"hatching" or "incubating" and the other two mean "air-conditioning." But the first character may also  imply "staying put" in a place.

凤凰男 (feng4huang2nan2)
phoenix man

This term refers to men who grew up in remote rural areas but have moved to big cities thanks to their efforts and their family's support. They hope to marry city girls but often encounter problems resulting from their different living habits and family backgrounds.

富裕病 (fu4yu4bing4)
affluenza

This is a portmanteau word by combining the two words "affluence" and "influenza." It refers to a special form of materialism in which people suffer from an epidemic of stress, overwork, waste and indebtedness as they pursue more goods.

飞鱼族 (fei1yu2zu2)
flying-fish clan

This term, deriving from the title of a novel "Poissons Volants sur Paris," refers to those Chinese who give up their well-established careers in their home country and go overseas to study in elite foreign universities.
