帕克 (pa4 ke4) handkerchief advocator

The Chinese term became popular after China’s online messaging service provider Tencent launched a handkerchief design campaign last year to encourage the use of handkerchiefs to protect the environment. The winner will be called a 帕客 or a “handkerchief advocator,” as it refers to green consumers who prefer to use handkerchiefs instead of throw-away paper tissues in support of low-carbon life.

劈硬柴 (p2 eng3 za2) Go Dutch, split the bill

In English-speaking countries, people say “go Dutch” or “split the bill” to mean to pay one’s own expenses on a date or outing. In Shanghai, you can do the same by 劈硬柴 (pi eng za) or literally “chopping the hard firewood.”

Although the city first got gas for utilities nearly 150 years ago, wood-burning stoves were still used by many residents until the 1970s, and the firewood was chopped into small pieces of the same size.

In the past three decades, more and more people, particularly young people. have become used to the “Dutch treatment” and they use the local phrase 劈硬柴 (pi eng za) to describe it.

平衡恋 (ping2 heng2 lian4) beauty-wealth-love

苹果皮 (ping2 guo3 pi2) iPod “peel”

屏幕少年 (ping2 mu4 shao4 nian2) screenagers

A British survey of 3,000 youngsters found that many teenagers spend nearly 10 hours a day staring at smartphones, TV, iPods, laptops or playing video games.
