物权法 (wu4quan2fa3) property law 

Since China has modified its constitution and launched protection of personal property rights, the country began to draft its first property law to implement the protection of  people’s legal properties. The law is expected to be passed during the ongoing session of the National People’s Congress.

网络推手 (wang3luo4 tui1shou3) Internet star-maker

This Chinese term refers to people who use the Internet to create new stars in various fields by bringing someone into the spotlight of public attention from oblivion.

尾货 (wei3huo4) surplus goods

This term usually refers to textile goods made of leftover materials from contracted production of brand-name products, products originally manufactured for export, or knockoff products made by manufacturers of customer-ordered products. They are usually sold to retailers at lower-than-cost prices.

沃客 (wo4ke4) work 2.0

This is a new type of Internet-based service trading market. Companies or individuals may post their assignments (usually for graphic design, logos or innovative ideas) on a Website and anyone may bid for the assignments. Some people call work 2.0 the “business version” of Web 2.0.

窝案 (wo1an4) collective corruption

This term refers to a corrupt act carried out via the collusion of a group of people, who usually work in the same work unit or department.

伪中产 (wei3zhong1chan3) pseudo-middle class

This term refers to those asset-rich and cash-poor salary earners who have a few “middle class” symbols, such as a suburban house and a private car, but don’t have much cash at their disposal. It may also refer to those “all work and no play” people who are too busy making money to enjoy a middle-class life.

网络钓鱼 (wang3luo4 diao4yu2) phishing

This term refers to the activity of using social engineering techniques to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, in an electronic communication. Phishing is usually carried out by using e-mail, fake Websites, copy-cat Web pages or an instant message.

维他命电影 (wei2ta1ming4dian4ying3) vitamin movie

Audience will have some fun from such movies, which may even teach them some simple but useful tips or principles of life. But don’t expect these movies to shock audiences’ nerves by staging grand scenes. Instead they leave audiences feeling relaxed and happy.

网络达人 (wang3luo4 da2ren2) Net advisor

The term refers to warm-hearted people who give advice to others on the Internet. They cover all kinds of topics, ranging from marriage to home decoration. They are not necessarily professional consultants, but their personal experiences do help others.

玩商 (wan2shang1) PQ, play quotient

A play on the term IQ, PQ means the ability of a kid to learn through play. Chinese children have been so burdened with homework that they suffer a very low PQ.

捂盘惜售 (wu3pan2xi1shou4) property hoarding

It refers to the speculative practise when developers hold back the sale of a new property project in the hope of reaping fatter profits in the future.

午漂族 (wu3piao1zu2) lunch-break drifters

Many office workers have an hour break at noon. Since it is too long for lunch but too short for napping, they often wander on streets or in office buildings seeking the right places to kill the time.

无固定期限劳动合同 (wu2gu4ding4qi1xian4lao2dong4he2tong2) open-term labor contract

According to the revised labor law, any employee who has twice signed an employment contract with his/her employer is entitled to an open-term contract.

外貌协会 (wai4mao4 xie1hui4) good-looks club

Youngsters these days often classify those who give undue priority to good looks when they are looking for a life partner or making friends as a member of the good-looks club. Some also refer to those with a beautiful face as a good-looks club member.

我一代 (wo3yi1dai4) Me Generation

The term refers to Chinese young people born after 1980, who are usually the only child in their family. They live a much more modern and comfortable life than their parents and know little about how to share things with others. The self-centered generation has a higher expectation on life qualities and cares nearly nothing beyond their materialistic life.

文化低保 (wen2hua4 di1bao3) cultural access initiative

This Chinese term combines the word “culture” and “minimum assurance” as from the minimum social security system to mean providing disadvantaged groups of people with the basic access to cultural activities. For instance, a county government promises each year to bring at least one art performance, six movies and one new book per person to villagers living in remote mountainous areas.

娃娃装 (wa2wa2zhuang1) baby-doll dress

A woman can never look too young, and that’s probably why baby-doll dresses and blouses featuring thin and light fabric, lace, knots and fluffy ornaments have regained popularity.
