US President Barack Obama received a standing ovation in a public address to Kenyans, shortly before he ended his recent visit to the country. From childhood female education to the fight against corruption, Obama told Kenyans that the country must invest more to realize its full potential.

Light entertainment began the program, with some of Kenya's best known musicians taking to the stage.

At 11 a.m. local time, the US president's step sister delivered a moving introduction.

"I want to thank the American people, for trusting Barack, Barack who is our son, to be up for what most of us would agree, is the most difficult job in the world," said Auma Obama, Barack Obama's half-sister.

The US president received a standing ovation from the crowd in a packed gymnasium that lasted long after he had reached the podium, the theme song ‘I am Coming Home’.

"I am proud to be the first American President to come to Kenya, and of-course I am the first Kenyan American to be President of the United States," Obama said.

In a speech geared toward a Kenyan audience, Obama outlined his five pillars for progress that would lift Kenya from its current challenges, calling on Kenyans to avoid tribal politics, wipe out corruption, provide education for girls, empower the youth and employ democracy.

"I am here as president of a country that sees Kenya as an important partner. I am here as a friend who wants Kenya to succeed," he said.

"The pillars of that success are clear: strong democratic governance, development that provides opportunity for all people and not just some, a sense of national identity that rejects conflict for a future of peace and reconciliation and today we can see that future for Kenya on the horizon but tough choices will have to be made."

The US president spoke for 45 minutes, touching on topics such as violence against women and the importance of education for girls.

Its was an inspiring performance from a man they feel strongly attached to.

Obama had promised to be frank during his talk and he did not disappoint, judging by the number of applause and standing ovation he received.
