4. Two Koreas, US and Japan add variables that impact on northeast Asia
South Korea and the US declared on July 8 that a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system would be deployed in South Korea. Around this time, North Korea conducted two nuclear tests.
Since March, Japan enforced its new security bills. The bills allow Japan's Self-Defense Forces to be dispatched overseas to engage in armed conflicts and help to defend others even if Japan itself is not attacked, which marks a turning away from Japan's purely defensive and pacifist strategy.
5. China firmly defends international rule of law
South China Sea arbitration lacks legal basis
China reaffirmed that it will not accept the Arbitral Tribunal's claim on July 21 that it would soon issue the so-called final award of the South China Sea arbitration unilaterally initiated by the Philippines. China received support from nearly 120 countries and more than 240 parties.
In October, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte reached an agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to China to bring the South China Sea issue back to the correct track of bilateral negotiation and consultation.
6. Terrorist attack shows new trend
Terrorists attacked the French city of Nice on July 14, leaving at least 84 people dead. The Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was killed by a gunman at an art exhibition on December 19.
Many countries such as Belgium, Turkey and Egypt have suffered terror attacks this year. War against extremists is ongoing in Iraq and Syria. Terrorism has become more global, more regional, more fragmented, and is spreading over the internet. Thus, China proposed that the United Nations play a coordinated role in the global anti-terror campaign, an idea that has been widely echoed in the world.
7. G20 2016 summit held in Hangzhou
Chinese think tank contributes to global governance
The 11th Group of 20 summit was held on September 4 and 5 in Hangzhou. Chinese President Xi Jinping suggested the building of a more innovative, open, inclusive and comprehensive global economy and introduced China's concept on global economic governance.
The Hangzhou G20 summit has made achievements in creating new growth patterns, improving global economic and financial governance, promoting international trade and investment, and accelerating inclusive and comprehensive development pattern.
