Do we need a 'men's day'?

International Women's Day, which falls on March 8 every year, has been celebrated for decades. There are also growing calls for a "men's day" to help draw more attention to gender equality. Do we need an international Men's Day? Our forum readers share their opinions here and you are also welcome to add yours.

1. Palmer (India)

We have celebrated Men's Day on Nov 19 for several years. The objective is to highlight discrimination against men and boys, while at the same time hailing their achievements and contributions to society. Unwritten rules make it difficult for men to talk about feelings of depression or to admit to being victims of violence by other men, while women are living by a whole set of rules that were forced upon them. What tends to be forgotten is the fact that society has always demanded strength from men and emotional expression from women. Hence, while one gender is allowed to cry and fight, the other is pressurized into denial and silence.

2. Elena (US)

My first thought when I heard that there was an International Men's Day was to sigh and roll my eyes. International Women's Day has its own historical background. The reaction when people from an oppressed group set up an event or day to celebrate the achievements that have been made and to inspire people to continue to tackle inequality this is the result.

3. Jonathan (China)

Men's Day is not a new concept in China. The holiday was proposed to several years ago without much success. I think it is necessary to set up such a day. Gender rights are often only measured as women's rights here. Chinese men also face issues or feel discriminated against. Several of their rights, including reproductive rights, child custody, marriage, divorce, health and shorter life spans, domestic violence and allegations of rape are much less discussed.

4. Ryan (China)

It's a good occasion for women to show care and love to their husbands. Women can make their husbands feel understood by their family. This would no doubt help increase the happiness of the whole family and enhance the development of a harmonious family. The setting-up of a new festival would also enhance the festival economy.

5. CM Liew (UK)

Why isn't there a White History Month to echo the Black History Month? We sometimes hear about a "Gay Parade" but never about a group of straight people taking to the streets to redress the balance. I don't think such a holiday is needed.(英文文本 via ChinaDaily)
