是否应该原谅曾经涉毒的艺人?
Should we forgive celebrities who take drugs?

China has banned celebrities from returning to the limelight if they are found taking drugs. Do you think it is fair to impose such a ban, especially if it's just a one-off mistake? Share your views on our website.

1. Joseph (China)

For public figures, every personal affair is a public spectacle, so it is reasonable to hold them to higher moral standards. Their misbehavior will hurt the entertainment business itself, and have a negative impact on their followers, especially on teenagers. The public should adopt a zero-tolerance approach to drug use and celebrities have an obligation to steer clear of illegal substances.

2. Md Naimur (South Korea)

In my country, The Korean Entertainment Management Association and TV stations would deal with the scandalous stars harshly and anyone caught abusing drugs can expect an end to their career. Most Koreans oppose drugs and many celebrities who have smoked marijuana have never made successful comebacks. Even in cases that go to court, the involved stars are still less likely to return to public entertainment if they are not forgiven by the public.

3. Sago (Japan)

When a celebrity is caught taking drugs in Japan, he or she will be fired by the talent agency. Those in TV and film business are extremely sensitive about drug-related issues. When the actress and singer Noriko Sakai was found taking drugs, her talent agency fired her and made a public apology. Prosecutors said her influence as a celebrity meant she should not be handled with leniency. The drug scandal cost her billions of yen in cancelled contracts and hindered her efforts to return to the entertainment industry after her probation ended.

4. Hexa (Germany)

In Germany, the public is more tolerant toward celebrities who take drugs. Smoking marijuana is not a crime in the country, and the Federal Constitutional Court recommends not enforcing a penalty for possession of small amounts of cannabis for personal use, as long as the possessor is not near a school and poses no threat to the public.

5. Marshhawk (US)

Although the entertainment industry in the US generally has a broader tolerance for recreational drug use than other fields and illicit drug use is tolerated so long as it doesn't interfere with production, once some celebrity is caught taking drugs, their public imaged is stained. The anchors in some talk show often criticize even satirize those stars who use illegal substance.(英文文本 via China Daily)
