Chengdu holds innovation and entrepreneurship fair

The Chinese government is continuing its drive to generate more economic and industrial innovation. And China's first trade fair focused on innovation and entrepreneurship is underway in the southwestern city of Chengdu.

Delegations and organizations from dozens of countries, including Russia, the US and France, are attending this year's Chengdu Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship fair.

Chengdu has once again drawn the world’s attention, especially for ambitious innovators from abroad. More than 150 enterprises from more than 30 countries have come to the event. China regards innovation as a core part of the nation's development and it is striving to provide a friendly environment for entrepreneurs. Experts explained some ways to achieve that.

"The European commission has the 'horizon 2020,' which is a fund with US$16 billion and will expand in the next two years on projects and all over the world in dealing with research and innovation,” said Carmen Cano De Lasala, deputy head of delegation of Delegation of the European Union.

“China has access to these funds and very recently, the project developed in China, by Chinese and European companies, researchers and academics universities can be funded by this program.

“Another important element to promote innovation is that to have better IPR protection, so that EU companies feel more attracted to the Chinese companies.”

The event is seeking to promote trade and high tech deals between cities in the west of China and countries in Europe. In June, the Chinese government announced policies to encourage more grassroots entrepreneurship and mass innovation. An expert from the EU shared his views on promoting an innovative spirit.

"For instance, universities—or below universities—to promote business and young people to grow business, and for new sectors—automation and new health care services also—and renewable energies, and those sectors you can think about new opportunities and businesses. This has to be promoted amongst young people; not only people who are graduates, also people who have job experiences that want to create new companies," said Carmen Cano De Lasala, deputy head of delegation of Delegation of the European Union.

China has 1,600 business incubators to develop businesses in science and technology. Some 80,000 enterprises have benefited from these programs. Experts say that achieving the government's aim of boosting innovation and entrepreneurship will require a better institutional environment and improved public service system to support future development.
