Daughter who granted parents' suicide pact wish ''out of compassion and love'' escapes action

Retired GP David Arnold, 82, and his wife Elizabeth, 85, enlisted the help of daughter Georgina Roberts - David had lost a leg and Elizabeth had Alzheimer's.

A daughter told today how she gave her elderly parents a poisonous cocktail of drugs to help them carry out a suicide pact “out of compassion and love”.

An inquest heard how retired GP David Arnold, 82, and his wife Elizabeth, 85, enlisted the help of daughter Georgina Roberts after deciding they wanted to die.

David was bed-ridden after losing a leg while his wife – a retired teacher – had Alzheimer’s disease.

Swiss euthanasia clinic Dignitas rejected the couple due to Elizabeth’s mental condition and a failed overdose bid.

Georgina, 59, said: “My actions were motivated entirely by compassion and love for my mother and father.”

CPS investigators later ruled it was “not in the public interest” to take action against her.

Pact: Dr David Arnold and wife Elizabeth

Unable to “face life apart”, the couple told Georgina on July 13, 2012, they were ready to die.

She said: “Mum told me Dad had talked to her. He had had enough and so had she.”

Recalling the day of their death Georgina said: “I asked if they were sure today was the day. They said it was but they wanted to watch the Proms on TV first.”

On her father’s instructions, she had bought drugs on the internet and stashed them at their £400,000 bungalow in Newbury, Berks.

After they had consumed them in a drink they “quickly slipped into a deep sleep”. She said she “stood there for 20 minutes in stunned silence. It was surreal.”

She went on: “I went to the kitchen and came back after about 30 minutes.

“I checked dad’s pulse and he had gone. Mum was still there so I had to go back out to the kitchen.”

The inquest heard Mrs Roberts first denied being present but later changed her story.

With tears in her eyes, she said: “I acted irrationally but I realised afterwards it was wrong.”

Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford recorded a narrative verdict.
