Sexy in your sixties? 65 is the age we feel the best about our looks, study reveals

We are most confident in our appearance when we reach 65, according to a new study.

Those aged over 65 feel the most confident in their appearance (81 per cent), compared to youngsters aged between 16 and 24 (70 per cent).

Only six in ten Brits (60 per cent) aged between 45 and 54 said they feel most confident in their appearance.

New research released today by beauty product company L'Oreal shows we even feel younger than our actual age.

Over half (53 per cent) of British people claim to feel more youthful than they are, while a third (34 per cent) feel as much as ten years younger.
It seems men feel more positive about their looks in their later years (21 per cent), compared to just 16 per cent of women.

Meanwhile, 70 per cent of men feel 'very confident' in their appearance, compared to just 58 per cent of females.

On the other hand, developing grey hair, dark eye circles and wrinkles are the biggest fears for women.

Men are also most concerned about their hair turning grey, followed by wrinkles and hair loss.

And to ensure they keep their good looks, more than a third of men (35 per cent) use anti-ageing products, compared to 54 per cent of women.
The study quizzed 2,000 British men and women on their looks and when they feel most confident.

The L'Oreal Confidence Index reveals confidence in our looks goes through ups and downs as we age.

Beauty may also be more than skin-deep, with 65 per cent believing their physical appearance affects their overall confidence.

For women, appearance plays the most significant role in confidence with 70 per cent saying it is one of the areas that most affects them.

This compares to work (41 per cent), financial security (62 per cent) and having personal supporters such as family and friends (62 per cent).

For men, financial security is a prime source of confidence (67 per cent), along with having personal supporters (55 per cent) and their job (48 per cent).

A third (30 per cent) wish they looked younger, with 93 per cent of women claiming beauty and hair products can boost their confidence.

The study also highlights where in the UK we feel most confident.
Those in the West Midlands lead the charge and start using products earliest at the age of 28.

However, the research suggests those in the West Midlands are happiest with their physical appearance (73 per cent), compared to Northern Ireland which props up the list at 49 per cent.

People in East Anglia are most likely to wish they looked younger (37 per cent), compared to just 18 per cent in the North East.

Michel Brousset, from L'Oreal UK & Ireland, said: 'It is clear that as a nation we approach ageing in very different ways.

'But it is brilliant to see that contrary to what people may think, we actually get better with age and gain even more confidence in ourselves and our appearance.
'We're certainly noticing that the beauty needs of an ageing population are rapidly changing.
'And with the UK population of over 65s set to double by 2050, we're no doubt set for even more changes in how people use beauty as a small confidence boost in their everyday lives.'(MailOnline)
