From Twitter with love: American spies snooping on our social media feeds

American Special Forces have launched a worldwide recruitment drive for social media geeks to spy on millions of European twitter and Facebook users.
US Army Special Operations commanders have ordered a ‘Top Secret’ programme to try and find a company to sift through the continent’s social media network.
The recruitment campaign was launched amid fears that terrorists operating across Europe could launch attacks on America’s military bases.
It will also identify individuals willing to help America infiltrate extremists organisations that might threaten the United States by mining as many tweets and posts as possible.
A senior security source said: “Sifting through twitter, facebook and other areas of social media has become a huge global business to maintain security.
“It is amazing the amount of information that can be mined every second and the software available to help in cross-referencing the information is highly sophisticated.
“Clearly the Americans want to start mining through Europe’s social media to make sure it is monitoring it for any threats coming from groups or individuals.
“It will also help US analysts identify growing patterns and attitudes towards America.
“Ever since 9-11 the US clandestine services have warned the administration that they need to be ahead of the game to spot what could happen in the future.
“In the late 1990’s they suspected strongly that al-Qaeda was planning a huge attack but the CIA did not get the funding and backing to track it down.
“Now they want to leave nothing to chance.“
An advert announcing the “classified secret“ job was posted on the US government’s jobs portal FedBizOps and said it wants spies to “identify violent, extremist influences“.
It is thought the interview process will be conducted in secret and applicants will have to sign an agreement not to disclose anything about the job.
As well as spying on European-sourced tweets the social media spies will also be required to identify threats coming from Iceland, Israel, Greenland and Russia.
Even though the project is classified Top Secret, an Army contract shop in Europe posted the job search a wealth on the FedBizOps contract website last week.
America’s advert actually marked the job vacancy as “Social Media Data-mining, Localized Research, Market Audience Analysis, and Narrowcast Engagement Requirements,“
It added that the computer spook company that will be taken on in secret: “. . . will support both the European Command and Special Operations Command Europe.“
The US Army also said it wanted a contractor who could “provide detailed social media research and analysis, on-the-ground native research and analysis, and customized social media website development and execution.“
It added: “This will include open source information, detailed social media data-mining, social media monitoring and analysis, target audience analysis, media kit development and social media platform operations.“
