Girl locked naked by family for five years after abortion
24-year-old Zhang Qi had been locked naked by her family in a damp hut at Zhangjiaqiao village, Xiaogan city of Hubei province for five years. She was freed on February 25, 2015 with the help of net users.
Zhang was locked by her family after she got pregnant at the age of 18. Her relationship was against the will of her parents. Later, when she lost her baby, she suffered mental disorders. In order to avoid bad influence to Zhang’s younger brother, her parents sent her to their home village and locked her up, according to netizens.
Despite the multiple times that web users appealed to free the girl, the situation didn’t improve. Media coverage was also blocked, allegedly due to the interference of the girl’s parents, said the netizens.
To Ms. Ye, mother of Zhang, this was a totally different story. Ye said she did all this for the good of her daughter, who was insane.
"She would often take off her clothes and ran outside. If you dress her up, she would just tear whatever she’s wearing," Ye said. She said her daughter also throw bricks at people.
"She’d beat everyone, even her own brother," Ye said she and her husband sent Zhang to the mental hospital for several times, but her condition never improved.
According to local police, Zhang Qi and her younger brother went to the province’s capital city Wuhan a few years ago with their parents. Only her grandfather was doing farm work in the village with her grandmother, who was blind.
Zhang had a boyfriend in 2009, but the relationship was strongly opposed by her mother, as she said Zhang’s boyfriend was one of her remote relatives. She banned Zhang of seeing the guy and verbally abused her in the street, which led to Zhang’s mental disorders later. Zhang was then sent back to the home village and was taken care of by her grandfather.
The neighbors said they often heard cries of Zhang at night. Most of the time she cursed her mother. Sometimes she asked to go out and sometimes she cried for hunger. Netizens blame Ye for not being a responsible mother, which Ye rebutted with Zhang’s mental disease and her economic situation.
It was said that Zhang was visited by a number of netizens on holidays. She story caught media attention recently. She was finally freed on February 25.
Doctors said Zhang’s muscles have atrophied, she is now recovering at hospital.
However, some net users worried about the after math.
"What are you going to do next? If her family wouldn’t bother caring for her, she probably would become a tramp on the street, do you really think that’s better?" said a weibo post.
"I believe her family wouldn’t lock her up unless they have to. Mental disease is difficult to cure and cost a lot of money. It could be a huge burden for an impoverished family," another post said.（英文文本 Via english.sina.com）
