Given Amway's emphasis on direct selling, the lack of well-developed retail distribution systems in China seemed to play right into the company's hands. An Amway representative could offer a far broader range of products than could be found at most Chinese retail outlets and often at a lower price. Also the strategy of selling to friends, relatives and acquaintances seem to make great sense in a society that emphasis social relations and interpersonal networks.

From the outset, Amway was determined to be one of the first direct marketers to establish a significant presence in China. Accordingly, it entered the country on a significant scale, quickly surpassing Avon and Mary Kay to become the largest direct marketer in China.
