The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race is a rowing race in Britain between the two oldest universities in the world： the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. The Boat Race is held between the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club on the Thames in London. Traditionally, members of both teams are in blue dress, yet Oxford in dark blue and Cambridge in light blue, so they are respectively known as “Dark Blue“ and “Light Blue“. The first race was in 1829 and it has been held annually since 1856，except during the two world wars. It takes place generally on the last Saturday of March or the first Saturday of April. The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race is also known as the University Boat Race.
The Boat Race was started in 1829 by a student at St. John’ College of Cambridge, and his school friend who was at Oxford. Cambridge challenged Oxford to a race at Henley-on-Thames. The second race occurred in 1836，with the venue moved to London. During the following couple of years, there was disagreement over where the race should be held, with Oxford preferring Henley and Cambridge preferring London. It was not until the formation of the Oxford University Boat Club that the race between the two universities resumed. Finally, the tradition continues to the present day with the loser challenging the winner to a re-match annually. The most recent race was on Saturday, 3 April 2010 at 4:30 p.m., with the Cambridge Rowing Team being the winner.
The race is a competition between two eights, with the course of totally 6,779 meters from Putney to Mortlake upstream, and is timed to start on the incoming flood tide. An Eight is a rowing boat used in the sport of competitive rowing, which is designed for eight rowers and a cox. Each of the eight rowers has one oar, with four rowers on their right hand side and the other four on their left hand side. The rowers are seated in the opposite direction of the racing course, yet the cox seated at the stem of the boat faces the boat’s forward direction, steering the boat with a rudder and conducting the rowers. The Boat Race has already been one of the Britain’s，even the World’s, most popular events. The event was broadcast live by the BBC annually before 2005. However, after that， the BBC handed over broadcasting rights to ITV until 2010, when ITV returned the rights to the BBC. Each year, approximately 250,000 people watch the race live from the banks of the river. Moreover, far more than 20 million audience watch the event live on TV around the world. By 2010，the Cambridge Rowing Team had been victorious 80 times, and the Oxford Rowing Team had won 75 times, with only one dead heat in 1877.
