After spending two years to study English Literature at Exeter College, Qian received his Bachelor of Literature. During this period, he spent almost all his time reading, including a variety of books as literature, philosophy, history, psychology, as well as a large amount of western modem novels. There is the best library all around the world in Oxford- Bodleian Library, which contains not only the tremendous central library but also dozens of special libraries around it. Thanks to his formidable erudition, Qian was employed as the contributing editor of Oxford Eastern Philosophy, Religion, and Art books. Being connected with his knowledge, there is an anecdote. It is recorded that he read his family name as Tieins，avoiding to be misunderstand as “dog“. At that time, it was common for Chinese to write their names in Pinyin Romanization. His family name “qian“ was spelled as “Ch，ien“ in Pinyin Romanization, and westerners were prone to pronounce it similar to “shan"，which was the pronunciation of “dog“ in. French. If had not known French, Qian won’t do this kind of thing, which accurately proved his formidable erudition.
Qian wrote English with a free pen, which had a close relationship with the strict training of his tutorial in Oxford. The highest advantage of Oxford is keeping the old tutorial system, one tutorial teaching one or two students. One benefit of the tutorial system is that students receive direct feedback in a small discussion setting. Tutorials were assigned by the school when they entered and Qian’s tutorial was Brett Smith, In the first year, they were asked to practice writing. Brett Smith was extremely rigorous, and required that the essays must be clear and brief, novelty is also necessary. Generally speaking, Qian benefited a lot from the special tutorial system.
