From Washington, this is VOA news.

Iraq carries out air strikes on al-Qaeda base in Anbar province. And Syria moves its first chemical weapons out of the country. I'm Michael Lipin, reporting from Washington.

The Iraqi government says it has killed more than 20 militants in an air strike near the al-Qaeda held cities of Ramadi and Fallujah. It also released a video to prove it. An Iraqi military official told the Associated Press that Tuesday’s air strike targeted the Al-Qaeda operation center in Ramadi, capital of the Sunni-dominated Anbar province. Al-Qaeda militants seized Ramadi and Fallujah last week. Iraq prime minister Nouri al-Maliki has urged residents to expel the militants to prevent a military offensive.

Syria has moved the first batch of its chemical weapons arsenal out of the country. The Organization for the Prohibition of chemical weapons and the United Nations said the chemical batch was placed onto a Danish vessel on the Syrian port of Latakiaon on Tuesday. The ship will remain at sea awaiting the arrival of additional chemical materials at the port. Syria has agreed to abandon its chemical weapons under pressure from the United States and Russia after a Sarin gas attack last August that western nations blamed on president Bassar al-Assad forces. Damascus and its ally Russia blamed Syrian rebels for that attack.

Turkey's government has fired hundreds of police officers. The firings are part of a government purge of Turkish police and prosecutors who have been running an investigation into an alleged high-level government corruption. Dorian Joneshas more for VOA from Istanbul. In the capital Ankara, 350 police officers were sacked and reassigned after a government decree was issued at midnight Monday local time. Hundreds of officers from neighboring towns have been assigned to replace those who were removed from their post.

The move follows a launch over a major probe into government corruption involving alleged to rigged construction tenders and laundering of money from neighboring Iran. Three cabinet ministers ended up resigning following the detention of their sons. But prime minister Rejeb Erdogan has described the investigation as a dirty plot and part of an international conspiracy to overthrow the government. Dorian Jones, VOA news, Istanbul.

A powerful arctic blast of air has swept across much of the United States causing temperatures to plummet so low that thousands of schools have to shut down and millions were forced to stay indoors. The current temperature here in Washington is minus seven degree Celsius. But the wind chill makes it feel like minus twelve. As VOA’s Brian Allen explains a weather pattern called the Polar Vortex is causing the dramatic drop in temperatures.

In Chicago, residents renamed their city Chiberia after the temperature did lower than parts of Siberia. that is really cold. It’s got especial you walk in the morning two or three minutes you face and hand just get really cold. More than half of the country is feeling the effects of a dangerous blast of arctic air which is dropping temperatures to record belows.

Captain Walker is a meteorologist with the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang. The polar vortex, a spinning low pressure system of very cold air that spins over the North Pole or the South Pole. And we are currently getting affected by the North Pole for the vortex when the Jet Strea came South, the floodgates open from the North. And we had a direct flow from the Arctic.

China says it will allow the first privately owned banks to operate in the country this year, as part of efforts to reform and open the banking sector. The Chinese regulatory body announced Tuesday that investors will be allowed to own and operate up to five banks in a closely supervised pilot project. Ownership will be restricted to Chinese citizens with foreign investment being considered for the future.

Dozens of Burmese journalists have held a protest to demand the release of a colleague who’s sentenced to three months in prison. The journalists and activists held signs saying the right of information is the life of democracy. As they marched through downtown Rangoon on Tuesday, they were protesting the conviction of Markeen, a journalist who was working on a story of corruption where she was arrested in the eastern state of Karyar. She was convicted last month of trespassing using abusive language and defamation after interviewing a lawyer for the story. Her employer, the Eleven Media Group and International Rights Groups suspect the charges are politically motivated.

I’m Michael Lipin for VOA news. We have more on these stories on our website at VOANEWS.com.
