From Washington, this is VOA News.

I'm David Byrd reporting.

Belgian police have killed two suspects and arrested a third after a shootout in the eastern city of Verviers.

Special magistrate Eric Van Der Sypt told reporters the suspects had automatic weapons and there was an intense firefight before two of the suspects were killed.

“During the search warrant in Verviers, certain suspects immediately opened fire with automatic weapons at special forces of the police. They opened fire during several minutes before being neutralized.”

Van Der Sypt said the raid was the result of an investigation that has been under way for a few weeks.  The magistrate said more anti-terrorist raids were underway around Brussels and Belgium has raised its anti-terrorism alert to its second highest level.

Van Der Sept said there was no established link to last week's attacks on a satirical magazine and a kosher grocery store in Paris.

Meanwhile French President Francois Hollande says moderate Muslims are the primary victims of radical Islamism even as his nation deals with the fallout of last week's terrorist attacks.

Speaking at the Arab World Institute in Paris, Mr. Hollande said radical Islam feeds on contradictions, influences, poverty, and unresolved conflict.

He said it is the Muslims who are the first victims of fanaticism, fundamentalism and intolerance.

Mr. Hollande said a crisis like last week's shooting at the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine can serve to undermine confidence, or awaken people to, that is, "shout their message all the louder."

US Secretary of State John Kerry is in Paris for a visit with the French President.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has made a surprise visit to northeastern Borno state, the center of the Boko Haram insurgency.

Mr. Jonathan, who is campaigning for re-election, spoke to troops at an army barracks and met with hundreds of civilians displaced from Baga, a town captured by the insurgents earlier this month.

The president has been criticized for not doing enough to push back the insurgents or to recover more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram last April.

Bad weather and rough seas have prevented Indonesian navy divers from reaching the main section of the AirAsia flight 8501 which crashed last month into the Java Sea.

National Search and Rescue official S.B. Supriyadi said heavy rain, coupled with high waves and poor visibility prevented the divers from examining the piece of wreckage.

A 30-meter long fuselage portion with a wing attached was spotted on the bottom of the sea on Wednesday.

Officials say the divers will attempt to go down again early Friday to try to retrieve bodies believed to be located inside that wreckage.

Pope Francis received a roaring welcome to the Philippines on Thursday, as he began a keenly awaited five-day visit to Asia's largest Roman Catholic country.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Manila cheering for the pontiff as he and his convoy drove by.

During his flight, Pope Francis spoke to reporters about last week's terrorist attacks in France.  He defended freedom of expression as a fundamental human right, but said "you cannot provoke or insult the faith of others."

The United States Treasury says new rules relaxing trade and travel restrictions to Cuba will be implemented beginning Friday.

Under the new rules, Americans will not need to apply for a license to be able to travel to Cuba for any of a dozen approved reasons.

The move is a step toward the Obama administration's goal of normalizing ties with Havana.
