Tough statements from a U-S official: A top U.S. diplomat for Europe says citizens in large parts of eastern Ukraine and Crimea are living under (what she called) "a reign of terror" spawned by a new influx of Russian military hardware. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland told the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Russian tanks, armored vehicles and artillery have poured across the border in recent days. Nuland also told the panel the Obama administration has not yet decided whether to supply the Ukrainian government with defensive weaponry in its fight against Russian-backed separatists.

Iran's foreign minister says a letter from a group of U.S. senators warning that a possible nuclear agreement could be revoked once President Barack Obama leaves office suggests that the United States is not trustworthy. Mohammad Javad Zarif told Iran's top clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, that the letter from the 47 Republicans “is unprecedented and undiplomatic.”

Casualties are reported from an explosion Tuesday in the Nigerian city of Maiduguri. A VOA reporter says the explosion hit the city's Monday Market area shortly after 4 p.m. local time. He says a number of people were killed or injured by the blast.  No one has claimed responsibility.

Ten people were killed in a helicopter accident that happened during the filming of a reality show in Argentina. Three major French sports figures--Camille Muffat, Alexis Vastine, and Florence Arthaud--are among the victims. Authorities say two helicopters collided during the filming of the show "Dropped."

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday it would’ve been better to use two separate e-mail accounts when she was secretary, but said she did nothing wrong.

“Looking back, it would be better if I simply used a second email account and carried a second phone, but at the time this didn’t seem like an issue.”

A New York Times report said the secretary used her personal account for official communications instead of a government address. Critics accuse her of trying to hide communications, including those surrounding the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

The U.S. Ambassador to South Korea left the hospital Tuesday, five days after he was attacked by a knife-wielding radical.  Brian Padden reports.

“U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert faced a packed room of reporters as he was leaving the hospital Tuesday.  ‘You know I feel pretty darn good, all things considered. I mean it was obviously a scary incident…’  The ambassador received 80 stiches to his face and surgery on left wrist after an ultra-nationalist activist slashed him last week at a forum on Korean reconciliation in Seoul.  He is expected to make a full recovery.  Brian Padden, VOA news, Seoul.”

Ivory Coast's former first lady Simone Gbagbo has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the post-election violence that took place in 2011. A court in Abidjan Tuesday found Gbagbo guilty of undermining state security and organizing armed gangs in violence that left 3,000 people dead.

A suicide truck-bomb and roadside explosives killed at least one person and wounded more than 24 in Egypt's northern Sinai Peninsula.  Edward Yeranian reports.

“A man driving a stolen water-tanker truck blew himself up at the gates of an Egyptian police camp in the northern Sinai town of el Arish, causing numerous injuries.  The attack comes only days before a high profile international investment conference in the southern Sinai resort town of Sharm el Sheikh. An unrelated roadside bomb killed one Egyptian Army officer and wounded several others.  An Egyptian police spokesman told local television the quick reaction of police prevented the suicide bomber from causing more serious casualties.  Edward Yeranian, Cairo.”

The value of the euro currency fell today, falling close to a 12-year low against the U-S dollar. The currency used in the 19-nation Eurozone dropped to $1.07, the lowest point since April 2003. The value of the euro has been dropping for weeks.  European investors and officials are worried that negotiations over Greece's bailout may prove difficult to resolve in the coming months.
