Vacant Housing in Beijing

According to a new census carried out by Beijing's Public Security Bureau, there are currently over 3.8 million empty flats in the city.

With just over thirteen million flats in Beijing according to the Bureau of Statistics, this suggests nearly a third of flats in the city are empty.

Academics are divided as to what the latest data suggests.

Some experts are say the number shows serious problems with Beijing's housing market, while others are questioning the accuracy of the figures.

The online community also has a lot to debate on the issue. Let's take a look:

(QD) Yang Zhongguang, an analyst at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, says on yicai.com,

I can't comment on the figures because the methodology used was unclear. There is no doubt there are a big number of empty flats in Beijing. But the number released by Beijing's Public Security Bureau hasn't been confirmed either by private or public institutions.

(BBD) While Hu Jinghui, vice president of a property agency, says on people.com.cn,

When people who are involved in the property market like us refer to vacant housing, we are talking about housing which has been built but not sold within a year. I'm afraid the data released by the Public Security Bureau has mixed-up the real meaning of vacant housing with its literal meaning.

(ZL) And Sheng Laiyun, spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics, says on xinhuanet.com,

The current vacancy rate is related to the area of unoccupied housing units, their structure and the length of time they've been empty. Under these standards, it's impossible to give a precise figure.

Yang Hongxu, vice president of a housing research institute on jb.sznews.com says,

No matter whether the number released by Beijing's Public Security Bureau is accurate or not, there is definitely a lot of empty housing units in Beijing. It's time for the government to consider releasing relevant taxes to curb and reduce the number of empty housing units and make more housing resources available to the public.

(BBD) But an unnamed official on bjnews.com.cn writes,

Police in Beijing are currently developing an electronic map connecting people living in the city with the location of their house or flat. The figure recently released by us is serving such a purpose. It has nothing to do with the literal meaning or the real meaning of the phrase of "vacant housing".

That wraps up today's Online Unleashed.
