Some people think that genetically modified (GM) crops are a positive development. Others, however, argue that they are potentially dangerous. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

思路分析:


转基因食品目前仍是一个备受争议的话题,反对转基因食品的主要理由有:

(1)转基因食品可能会包含未知化学成分,这些成分可能会危害人的健康。

(2)转基因作物可以抵抗虫害,减少害虫的数量,以害虫为生的捕食者也会受到影响,产生连锁反应,影响生态系统平衡。

(3)转基因作物的DNA可能会与其他作物的DNA混在一起,产生难以预料的后果。

支持转基因作物的主要理由有:

(1)转基因作物能够耐旱涝,抵抗害虫,可以在更为恶劣的条件下生存,这有助于解决土壤条件恶劣地区的粮食问题。

(2)转基因作物的产量更高,这能够增加粮食供给,降低粮价,减轻人们的负担。

(3)一些转基因食品口味更好,营养成分更加丰富,有利于人们健康以及提升食物多样性。

这道题目要求是 Discuss both these views and give your opinion. 因此两方面的观点都要涉及到,最后给出自己观点的时候写成支持或者反对转基因作物都可以。

There has been controversy surrounding genetically modified crops since their introduction decades ago. Critics argue that such technology could pose environmental and health hazards, while proponents maintain the benefits brought by genetically modified foods far outweigh their potential risks.

The main argument against genetically modified foods is that they could damage the environment and our health. Genetically modified crops are designed to be resistant to insects such as grasshoppers and moths, a feature that can reduce the number of plant pests by restricting their food supplies. Consequently, predators that feed on these insects will suffer too. This affects the food chain and may have serious repercussions for the environment. Moreover, some scientists claim that genetically engineered crops could produce toxic chemicals and are thus unsafe for human consumption.

Proponents argue that genetically modified technology is a positive development because it helps to improve people’s living standards. Compared with natural crops, genetically modified plants are able to grow in dry and salty land, tolerate insects and disease, and withstand extreme weather conditions. If these crops are widely planted in regions where population growth is rapid and arable land at a premium, then hundreds of millions of people will benefit. There will be more food produced and less people dying of famine and malnutrition. In addition, high-yielding genetically modified crops cut food prices by increasing supply, thereby bettering poor households the world over.

My view is that genetically modified crops can offer huge benefits to humanity. Although there are some potential risks associated with them, such risks can be mitigated through careful planning and testing. Genetically modified crops should be welcomed as a positive development.
