PUNK ROCK MUSICIAN IGGY POP
Hi, I'm Iggy Pop, and I'm going to show you my Miami.
Miami is a very musical town. It's full of some of the best musicians you'll find anywhere-Latin, pop, salsa, son-and there are some damn5 good rock players. It's nice to hear some music; it's just a little different, you know? It sounds good, doesn't it?
As soon as you cross this river, now you're in Little Haiti. The people who live right near here are generally people who are more or less off the boat. It's a rich culture with a lot of depth. They were the first people in the world to effect a successful slave rebellion.
I like it because it reminds me of how great my country used to be before it got all built-over and homogenized. I can come and relax for a few hours, and I just feel like, you know... ah! As soon as I get near, you know, the clothes are a little more colorful, people walk [in] a little different way. Maybe you're a little more open to the things around, and everything's a little simpler, a little more down to earth.
Some very artistic graffiti on the... you notice? Look at that.
There are voodoo stores all over here, spirits who protect the dead and serve as intermediaries to the spirits of your ancestors. These are beautiful, and you can pick Up nice paintings in some of these stores. These are costumes that you would use in various ceremonies, and you better believe some of the best singin' and dancin' in the world today goes on at some of those ceremonies, and that's the truth.
Miami is nothing like me, and that's why I need to be here. It's the opposite. I'm practical where this place is moody. I'm stolid, my interior, where this place has a certain flair. And, uh, I'm materialistic in the sense... in which this place is fundamentally spiritual.
The guy who runs this joint is an Aussie and he's... he runs English football games all day. He's got bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, and at night he's got the most open-mic club that I know of in the world. Anybody can play here. I made a video-I played live here and filmed it as a video for a song called "Little Know-It-AII" with Sum 41 on the Skull Ring album.
I don't really think of Miami as paradise, but I've found it for 10 years to be a place I can get something done without droppin' dead or going crazy.
So, that's pretty good. And there are enough eccentricities and oddities and [a] flow of life here that I don't get depressed as easily as I might in the rest of the world.
