I once attended a science lecture on the subject of neural regeneration in the retina. The person who gave the lecture wasn’t really physically my type (not that I have a type; I actually have several types, but no matter—the point is I wasn’t physically attracted to her). But as she talked about the research she was doing and described some of the results coming out of her lab, I found myself growing more and more attracted to her.
After the lecture, I talked with her about her research, and there was something about the combination of incredible enthusiasm, colossal knowledge of her topic, her sheer joy at doing the research she was in, her willingness and even eagerness to discuss that research with anyone who wanted to talk to her about it, and the easy confidence she had in her field of expertise that just…it just…whew! It made me weak in the knees.
Damn, I love confident, smart, well-educated women. Dear God.
