The Islamic State takes Palmyra: The insurgents overran the ancient Syrian city on Thursday. Heather Murdock reports.

“An amateur video posted on a social website Thursday shows what appears to be a gas field near Palmyra. This man in the video, presumably an Islamic State fighter, makes vague threats against Gulf Arab people and Alawites - the sect of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad - and the video shows a car driving on a road to Palmyra. The Islamic State group the same day announced on Twitter that it had taken over the city, which includes a military base believed to house massive amounts of weaponry, an airport and a prison. Heather Murdock, Cairo.“

U.S. President Barack Obama has designated Tunisia as a major non-NATO ally of the United States. Mr. Obama met Thursday at the White House with Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi.

The American leader said he was pleased to hear of Tunisia's political change to a democracy.

And, speaking to the German Parliament in Berlin Thursday, Chancellor Angela Merkel said it is "unimaginable" for Russia to participate in a meeting of the world's leading industrialized countries as long as it is involved in the conflict in Ukraine. She said next month's Group of Seven meeting in Bavaria will not include Russia. This is VOA news.

Myanmar says it will work to protect members of the country's Rohingya minority that are risking their lives to flee poverty and persecution in the country. A spokesman says the government is committed to verifying the nationality of those in need of aid, as well as protecting and assisting Myanmar citizens. He adds that authorities will provide assistance and arrange repatriation to other people found in Myanmar.

U.S. President Barack Obama's trade agenda scored a victory Thursday when senators advanced a bill to facilitate approval of the Pacific Rim free trade pact. Michael Bowman reports.

“The 62-38 vote exceeded the three-fifths majority required and all but assures final Senate passage of Trade Promotion Authority or TPA, for which only a simple majority is required. That vote could come as early as Friday. TPA, also known as "fast track," would speed approval of the Trans-Pacific Partnership ((TPP)) of nations that account for about 40 percent of global economic output. Michael Bowman, the capital.“

Mr. Nkurunziza spoke on state television late Wednesday as he announced that the upcoming parliamentary elections will be delayed by a week, to June 5, because of recent political violence.

An international human rights group says Qatar has failed to improve conditions for migrant workers. In a report Thursday, Amnesty International said reforms have not come fast enough, adding that little had changed for the 1.5 million migrant workers in Qatar. The nation plans to host the 2022 World Cup. The world football organization FIFA welcomed the Amnesty report, urging authorities in Qatar to provide fair working conditions for all workers.
